Musicians: Recommended iPhone apps?

Category: Jam Session

Post 1 by Deadnight Warrior (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 29-May-2014 13:55:25

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone on here has any apps they could recommend. I haven't found any accessible metronomes or tuners, so that's one particular thing I'm looking for. I also have an adapter that I found on clearance somewhere a couple years back for hooking up a guitar to the phone. I've toyed around with iRig and AmpliTube but haven't had much luck with either, so alternatives or suggestions for working with these would be much appreciated. Finally, I'm primarily a keyboardist so would love to find any good softsynths that can be controlled off the phone with a midi keyboard. Thanks in advance and looking forward to your suggestions!

Awesome, thanks! Loving Tempo King and I see a lot of potential with Morf Wiz but can't seem to figure out how to use it. How do you switch presets?

It may not be precisely what you're looking for but Ireal pro music book and playalong is one app that I really like. You can download a lot of songs and use them for playalong in different styles like pop, rock or latin.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Also, anyone know if there's any accessible notation apps? Or any apps that work as flash cards or something similar for musical notes? I'll be starting to teach one on one music lessons soon and something like this would be extremely helpful.

iReal Pro is amazing! Just downloaded it and it's the perfect thing I need! I've been studying jazz piano for some time and now that I'm learning more about improvising this will come in so handy. Do you know how to import songs from the forums? I'd love to be able to have some jam tracks for jazz standards since practicing rootless chord voicings by myself can mess with my head. haha

What? You mean like use your phone as an amp? Are you serious?

I don't remember how exactly I did it. It involved me finding some links through my computer sending them in an email and doing some workarounds I don't remember. If you work on how to do it you should find a way. It's easier to browse the forums via regular computer though. I managed to download one set that has like 1001 jazz standards or something like that so I haven't needed anything more since.

OK, check out amp kit. Its 90 percent accessible I'd say and has a free version
and a plus.
i'd grab the demo for the free version and try it, and buy the plus app to save
some cash, deleting the free app after. there is also a Mac app for amp kit. One
time charge buys you everything. I know a lot of people that use amp kit as a
practice amp setup, for band practice, practicing at home, and some people
even record with it. The models sound quite good for what they are.

AmpKit transforms your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a powerful guitar amp
and effects studio! Just attach your electric guitar or bass using an interface like
Peavey AmpKit LiNK HD and rock out!

AmpKit is by far the most intuitive, easy-to-use app of its kind, for beginner and
expert alike. And AmpKit's two-stage amp modeling, convolution-based cabs
and positional mics deliver the ultimate in realistic tone on both clean and high-
gain setups. Finally, AmpKit offers the broadest range of available gear via its
in-app Gear Store—a total of 114 available amp channels, cabinets, pedals and
mics. No other app can match the ease of use, tone quality or gear selection
that you'll find in AmpKit.

TWO WAYS TO PLAY
You can start with either the free AmpKit app, or the paid AmpKit+; both apps
run on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, so you never need to pay twice for the app
or additional gear.

The free AmpKit app comes with a Peavey ValveKing amp (clean and very-high-
gain lead channels), two ValveKing cabinets (4x12 and 1x12), two pedals (Noise
Gate, Elevenizer overdrive pedal), two mics (Workhorse 57 dynamic mic,
Germann 87 condenser mic), and a built-in Noise & Feedback Filter.
The paid AmpKit+ app includes everything in the free version PLUS the following
additional gear, bundled at less than half normal price: Peavey 3120 amp with
clean, rhythm, and ultra-high-gain lead channels and matching 4x12 cabinet;
Colonel Vintage amp paired with matching 4x10 and 1x12 cabinets; Vintage Brit
amp with matching 2x12 cabinet; and distortion, fuzz, compressor, chorus,
phaser, flanger, reverb, and 10-band EQ pedals!
Both AmpKit and AmpKit+ have access to all the same great gear via the in-app
Gear Store, which lets you browse and buy an amazing selection: a total of 50
amp channels in 29 separate amps, 30 pedals, 26 cabinets and 8 mics. The
Gear Store also offers discounted bundles to help you expand your gear library
economically.

one of the better amp kit demos I can think of off the top of my head.

https://soundcloud.com/fred-haner/blade-breaker

Keep in mind sound cloud for some reason will start playing the next track in a
playlist, even if you just want to here one demo. So after the metal song ends,
you're done. lol

I know amp kit has a collection of demos on sound cloud as well, and youtube
will provide you enough examples of really really good, and really really bad
setups. lol

Might consider it when I get a new phone soon then. My ancient amp bit the dust recently.

TempoPerfect is a free accessible metronome!

Those things drive me nuts.

So who has played around with Garage Band? I would only be piddling around with it, not making recordings. I've only a 16-gb iPad and so don't really want to make recordings, would just putz around with instrumentation. Not exactly the high-flying pro like many of you all on here are.

Post 15 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Wednesday, 04-Jun-2014 19:47:11

Garage band isn't bad for what it is. I wish it had the new instruments from the
mac OS version, because they're a bit better, but its still easy enough to
compose simple songs with it in 10 to 20 minutes.

Post 16 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 05-Jun-2014 15:16:04

Can you just play it like an instrument though?
You know, bring up a synthesizer and play on it? Or is it mainly for recording.

Post 17 by Deadnight Warrior (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 05-Jun-2014 19:19:30

I just downloaded GarageBand but can't make much sense of it. I've got the piano pulled up but I don't really understand the controls like the sustain and arpeggiator modes. Would it be possible to control it with a MIDI keyboard?

Post 18 by Princess V (Newborn Zoner) on Sunday, 20-Jul-2014 3:05:48

I use Garage Band and also Sample Tank and now Alchemy with a MIDI keyboard, works
great. I can record tracks from any of those apps into Garage Band. I don't like GB's
setup, find it hard to navigate, but I can get it to work with some poking around.

Post 19 by Dolce Eleganza (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Friday, 25-Jul-2014 2:02:19

so I just bought the app called amazing slow downer.. I believe it's the best
thing on my phone, because i can slow down pieces to learn the hard parts, and
speed it up little by little, as well as changing the pitch to, say, 415 when I play
my baroque flute.. I absolutely love it!

Post 20 by Faial (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 20-Dec-2014 18:26:49

Oh great Dolce. Can this app adjust the tuning of my piano magically or is it just your flute? It's because I get crazy when my piano is not well tuned! ahahahahah
